Luke Canatella, Sr., 89, of Navasota, died Saturday morning, December 1, 2012, at Sheridan of Navasota.
Calling hours are scheduled for 12:00 to 4:00 pm Tuesday at Lindley-Robertson-Holt Funeral Home and a gathering of family and friends will begin at 5:00 pm at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church (saintstans.org), 1511 Hwy 90 in Anderson. Vigil Services and a Knights of Columbus Rosary will follow at 7:00 pm.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:00 am Wednesday, December 5, 2012, at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church with Rev. Rodolfo "JoJo" Cal-Ortiz as the celebrant. The rite of committal will follow in St. Stanislaus Church Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers will be Chad Craddock, Bradley and Taylor Eldridge, Jeremy Olguin, Randall Rohde and Clint Vezurk.
Luke was born September 11, 1923 in Bryan, Texas to Charlie and Minnie Vasta Canatella. A resident of Navasota since 1971, Luke retired from Ram Forge & Steel in 1985 where he was a machinist. He married the former Verna Podraza on January 29, 1955 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church. Along with his wife, Verna, they also managed for a number of years the U-Totem in Navasota. Luke was a devoted member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church as well as the Knights of Columbus Council 4054 of Anderson and had been a former member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church of Navasota. He enjoyed working in his garden, planting and caring for his flowers as well as cooking and baking. Luke was a big fan of the Houston Astros and a staunch supporter of the Navasota Rattlers. He listened to the Rattlers playoff game Friday evening before he died. Next to God and his Church, Luke loved his children and grandchildren, spending as much time as he could with each of them.
Luke was preceded in death by his wife Verna, his parents, sisters, Bonnie Canatella Josie Gargano, Mary Turner and Carrie Marino and brothers, Joe, Gus and Charlie Canatella.
Survivors include his six children, Carolyn Craddock and husband Pat of Navasota; Luke L. Canatella, Jr. and close friend Annette Fincher of Bryan, Bernadette Eldridge, Geralda Busa and husband Mike, Angelina Olguin and husband Juan, all of Navasota and Mary Garcia and husband Sam of Tomball; grandchildren, Chad, Trish and Ashley Craddock; Bradley Eldridge and son Lanceston Eldridge, Taylor Eldridge and wife Morgan and Courtney Eldridge, Stephanie Busa Rohde and husband Randall, Kristin Busa Vezurk and husband Clint, Jeremy and Heather Olguin and Erin and Kayla Garcia; sister, Willie Mae Licce of Navasota and brothers, Sam Canatella of Navasota and Anthony Canatella of Bryan.
