Gertrude E. Obernuefemann, nee Alexander, age 92, of O’Fallon, born Dec. 8, 1917 in Lebanon, passed away Dec. 24, at Memorial Hospital following a brief illness.

As a young World War II soldier preparing to go to Europe, Joseph H. Obernuefemann called Gertrude from Trenton, New Jersey, and asked her to come there right away to be married. She made the trip, married him on Nov. 6, 1943, and returned to O’Fallon to await his return. She previously worked at Martha Manning Dress Factory as a button marker and in other positions. More recently, she was involved in O’Fallon Twp. Sr. Citizens and the Nutrition Center, where she loved to play bingo and cards. She attended Calvary Pentecostal Church, where she enjoyed the singing and the children’s choirs.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph J. Obernuefemann, who passed away Aug. 2, 1983; her brothers, George and James Alexander; her sisters, Catherine Lawrence, Wilma Miller, and Virginia Aramowicz.

She is survived by her children Joseph E. Obernuefemann of Collinsville, Joyce (Dave) Ebert of O’Fallon; grandchildren, Joseph R. (Marie) Obernuefemann, Tina (Robert) Korte, Michael (Connie) Ebert, and Matthew (Martha) Ebert; great grandchildren, Ashley and Christina Holmes, Chianna and Joseph Obernuefemann, Rebecca Obernuefemann, Amanda and Rachel Korte, Austin and Brendon Herberts, Josiah and Eliana Ebert, and twins, Amelia and Madalyn, on the way; great-great grandchildren, Martina and Jacob Holmes; sisters-in law, Lucille Alexander of Orlando, Fla., and Lillian Obernuefemann of Belleville, and many nieces and nephews.

Also surviving are her dear friends, Bob and Marilyn Grafton, Debby Dierkes, Leta Johnson, Mary Ann Scott, Clem Smith, Sylvia Trebing, the Trares family and her friends at the Senior Center.

Funeral service was Saturday, Dec. 26, at the church, with Pastor Ernie Cobb officiating.

Burial at Mount Calvary Cemetery, Belleville.

Arrangements entrusted to Wolfersberger Funeral Home, O’Fallon.
