Abel was named after his fathers brother who was also Abel T. - He had a twin brother named Jacob who died in Arkansas during the Civil War.
Like his brothers he also joined the Union Army at the young age of 15 years and one month. The day he left home to join the Army was May 7, 1864. He served in the 47th Iowa Inf. Co. F, for 100 days, as a drummer boy.
On February 3, 1872, in Marion co., Iowa, he m. Elizabeth "Lizzie" Green, b. June 3, 1856 [1849?]. 1850 census record of Peoria co. Illinois; GREEN:Abram Green, 59, Susan, age 51, both b. United Kingdom; John 23, b. Pa., Jane 19, b. R. Island
, Mary Creen age 8, b. Ill - Elizabeth, age 1, b. Illinois, 1849. This Abram Green family were neighbors of Henry Walton, father of (Abel;s brother-in-law) Nathanel David Walton. (Oral history says; Elizabeth's father disappeared one day into the woods and was never seen again).
The family lived for a while at Olivet, in Mahaska co., Iowa, ca 1895 and later moved to Dayton, Iowa. Abel finally settled at Ackley, Iowa where he owned and operated a pool hall.
Abel d. April 2, 1934, in Des Moines, Iowa, at the home of his daughter Eliza Rusher, however his burial place is at the Ackley cemetery, Ackly, Iowa.
