Services will be held for Velma "V.J." Jones, 58, on Saturday, July 1 at the Brune and Buck Mortuary in Bishop. The Rev. Shirley Summers of the Pentecoastal Lighthouse, House of Prayer, Big Pine, will officiate. Mrs. Velma Lorene Bacoch Jones was born in Schurz, Nevada on Feb. 17, 1937 to Nicholaus and Eva Bacoch, and died at Klamath"Requa," California on June 25. Velma lived all her life in the Owens Valley, moving only to Southern California for two years. She attended Big Pine Unified Schools, graduating from high school in 1955. Velma was concerned for all people, her ministry was working with people. She worked for the Inyo County Welfare Department, Big Pine Sanitorium, Toiyage Indian Health Project, Northern Inyo Hospital, and Big Pine Indian Education Center. Giving her time and energy for others was her virtue, Velma was very instrumental in the development of the Toiyage Indian Health Project and the Owens Valley Indian Housing Authority. Velma was outspoken and had her native peoples' best interest at heart. She was the first Native American to be elected to the Bishop Elementary School Board in 1970-1973. Velma moved to Big Pine in 1976 where she began an impressive record of helping build the Big Pine Tribal Government, and where she was chairperson for about six years. She also represented the board on the Toiyabe Indian Health Board, Inter-Tribal Council of California, BIA Central California Advisory Board, California Indian Manpower Consortium, California Rural Indian Health Board, Big Pine Water Commission, Tribal Enrollment Committee, and the Economic Development Corporation. She served on many other committees for 18 years. In 1986, Velma received a Certificate of Commendation for Exceptional Performance from the California Highway Pat4ol after retrieving two young men from a burning car. In March 1994, she was nominated as the Big Pine Tribe's Women of the Year for her community service.
Survivors include her husband of 40 years, Clarence "Jack" Janes; sons Jack Jones of Bishop and Mark Jones of Big Pine; daughters Genevieve Schwenk of Klamath, California and Ramona Jones of Big Pine; sister Daisy Ramgeau of Big Pine, Aunt Pauline Westervelt; 12 grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and co-workers. She was preceded in death by her father Nicholas Bacoch Sr., mother Eva Butcher Bacoch; brother Nick Bacoch Jr.; sister Agnes Barlow and brother Michael Bacoch Sr. Interment will be at Woodman Cemetery in Big Pine.
