LaVida Barton

LaVida Estella Barton of Milton-Freewater passed away Jan. 11, 2000 at the Evergreen Health and Rehabilitation Center; she was 95.

Services were held at the Chapel of Herring Funeral Home with the Rev. Raymond Biggers of the First Christian Church officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Walla Walla Community Hospice through Herring Funeral Home.

Barton was born Sept. 7, 1904 in Rathdrum, Idaho, to Henry and Eveline Carmon Lortie. She moved to Minam, Ore., when she was three years old. She attended grade school at Wallowa, Ore. She lived with her sister, Melvina Armon.

On Jan. 31, 1921, she married Silas T. Barton in Enterprise, Ore. He was a logger and lumber company worker. They moved to Walla Walla in 1960 and her husband worked at the Memorial Golf Course and St. Mary Hospital. They made their home on Bush Street in Walla Walla. Mr. Barton preceded her in death in 1981.

She was an avid fisherman and fished in the Walla Walla area. She even fished from her wheelchair in her later years. She enjoyed handcrafts, such as embroidering and crocheting. She was a painter and specialized in doing "fuzzy" posters."

She was a good cook and her specialty was homemade biscuits and bread. She moved to Evergreen Milton-Freewater Health and Rehabilitation Center and has resided there for the past few years.

She was a member of the Christian Church of Wallowa and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Survivors include four daughters; Elvira Sims, Lebanon, Ore., Vera Roop, Walla Walla, Shirley Coffee [sic], Oregon and Clarice Kiesecker, Troy, Ore.; four sons, Arnold Barton, Goldendale, Wash., Virgil Barton, La Grande, Ore., Russell Barton, Portland, Ore., and Emmett Barton, Colorado Springs, Colo.; numerous grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren and numerous great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, a daughter, three brothers and three sisters. ~~~~~

NOTE: LaVida Lortie's parents were divorced when LaVida was very young. She was raised by her oldest sister, Melvina (Lortie) Armon and Melvina's husband, Samuel Denton Armon.
