Edward "Red" Strong, of Fannin, passed away Friday, June 8, 2012. He was born August 19, 1919, in Fannin to Mary Goff Strong and Nathaniel Strong. He spent his youth growing up in Fannin, and then joined the Civilian Conservation Corps as a young man, going to the West Coast working in forestry and firefighting.

He proudly served his country during WWII as a merchant seaman and afterward began a long career with Texas Marine and Industrial Supply in Houston, TX. He retired from Texas Marine after 34 years, and began his 2nd career of working on his ranch in Fannin.

His favorite things were helping others, being with his family, hunting and fishing, working with the land, being outdoors, and woodworking and building. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Jewel Bego Strong, and his daughters Myra Heard (and husband Allen), Cynthia Barfield (and husband Bennie), sister Idabel Payne, and granddaughter Alana Barfield. Also niece Deborah Gamblin (and husband Danny), nephew Pat Bego, and numerous nieces, nephews and many friends.

Visitation will be Sunday, June 10, from 6-8pm at Goliad Funeral Home on Ward St. in Goliad. Funeral will be held Monday, June 11, at 10am at Fannin United Methodist Church in Fannin.

Interment was at Live Oak Cemetery following the service. Pallbearers include Allen Heard, Neil Heard, Bennie Barfield, Pat Bego, Danny Gamblin, and Arnulfo Narvaez. Donations can be made to Fannin UMC or Alzcare of Victoria.
