Born to Benjamin Franklin Wombles (1884 – 1956) and Edith Smith (1879 – 1928) in the Bright Shade area of Clay County, Kentucky. One of 3 children born totally deaf. Vesta attended the Kentucky School for the Deaf with her older half-sister Martha Smith. Moved with family to the Vance area straddling Champaign and Vermilion Counties in the 1920s. Nicknamed "Tubby", though she was not plump.
Vesta "Tubby" never married, and spent most of her adult life with her siblings in the Vermilion and Champaign Counties of Illinois. She was cremated at her death (her final time spent in a nursing home), and her remains buried with her little brother (also deaf) George in the Sunset Memorial Cemetery in Danville. Vesta and George share a headstone.
