Born in Brightshade, Clay County, Kentucky, to Edith Smith and Benjamin Franklin Wombles. Family moved to Homer, Illinois in the 1920s, where nearby were living her father's brother and mother's sister Ulysses Wombles and Rebecca Smith family. Two brothers had married two sisters, and these families relocated to east central Illinois.

Sally Ann married John Sherman Staley, 18 years older. John was born in Nevins, Illinois, to William Staley and Lucinda Blue.

Sally's mother died in 1928 & father married John's sister Mrs. Emma Dick. Sally's brother Ernest Wombles married Emma's oldest daughter Louise Dick. Sally's Sister Bessie married a cousin of John's, Bert Phillips whose mother was Rose Staley Phillips. Thus the Wombles and Staley families intermarried, and lived in the Paris, Illinois area.

In 1929 Sally and John Staley had one child, Benjamin Washington Staley. After husband John and son Ben's death, widowed Sally died living with her remaining siblings in the Danville area, and is buried in the Sims Cemetery, next to her son. Husband John is buried in Edgar Cemetery in an unmarked grave next to his brother William Dayton Staley.

Family contact is welcomed. Author is grandchildren of Sally's sister Martha.
