He was awarded a Bronze Star Medal on July 1, 1948, and received an Award of Good Conduct Insignia on March 22, 1949 and a Certificate for Post Exchange Accounting Course in January 1950. Throughout his military career, Elbert was stationed in Paris Island, SC (1930), Managua, Nicaragua (1931), Quantico, VA (1934), Laguna Beach, CA (1943), Ewa, HI (1945, 1948), Morehead City, NC (1951), Cherry Point, SC (1952) and South Korea (1953-1954). He served under Col. Maynard Nohrden while stationed in South Korea. Thomas Burt Lenhart was also part of his platoon.
Elbert retired from the US Marine Corps on July 1, 1954.
His first marriage was to Edythe May Holladay on December 7, 1927. They had one son, Donald Robert Arndt, who only lived 2 months, 28 days. Their marriage was later annulled by Elbert's father.
Elbert later married his second wife, Mary Jane Davis, in 1932 in Virginia. He and Mary split sometime before 1942, as Elbert was engaged to be married to Caroline Mae Kotraba in August 1942, but that engagement ended and Elbert remarried Mary. They remained together until Mary's death in 1973.
Elbert married his fourth and last wife, Eloise Curtis Hyde, on June 26, 1974 in Farmville, NC. They were married for 18 years until Elbert's death in 1992, age 84.
