Joseph served an apprenticeship with his father, Charlesworth, to learn the blacksmithing trade along with a couple of his brothers. His father owned blacksmith shops in Marietta & North High Street near Lane Avenue in Columbus for many years. This author owns a large file (rasp) that Joseph used to trim horse shoes.
The first appearance of Joseph Michaelhaney Johnson was in the 1880 Census of Lawrence Township, Washington County, Ohio (ED: 220; Page: 170D) as 9 years of age. Charlesworth’s occupation was listed as a Blacksmith.
July 26, 1890, Joseph entered the ranks of the City of Columbus – Division of Fire as a Fireman. By 1897, he was appointed a Lieutenant; 1906 a Captain; and by 1916, he passed the examination for Battalion Chief but was not appointed. (Grade 100.5%). On April 26, 1930, he was suspended for a physical disability. The term ‘suspended’ was terminology used to describe ‘sick leave’. He suffered from Asthma caused by fighting so many fires. The Fire Department offered very little safety equipment to protect their Firefighters. The Fire Department was also subject to budget shortcomings of the City and they would ‘lay-off’ members of the Department until new monies were found.
Joseph’s bravery had been featured several times in the Columbus Dispatch & Morning Journal. Columbus Dispatch: August 10, 1903 & Ohio State Journal May 6, 1919.
