Charlotte Gail Dornheim Courtney, age 62, passed away Monday, July 3, 2000, in Ontonagon, Mich. She and her husband were on their way across the country to visit her sisters in Scranton, Pa., and daughter Robin, in Middletown, Conn.
A memorial service was held in Scranton. A local service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Clarkston First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Mark S. White will officiate and the Order of Eastern Star will participate. A luncheon served by the deacons will follow the service.
Charlotte was born to Fred and Helen Dornheim on Oct. 20, 1937 in Elmhurst, Pa. She graduated from Tech High School in Scranton, Pa., in 1956. She married George Lawrence (Larry) Courtney in 1960 in Lewiston. They spent the first 2 1/2 years of marriage in Oahu, Hawaii, where Larry was stationed at Schofield Barracks with the Army. After the military, they made their home in Lewiston from 1964 through 1977 when Larry went to work for USDA. They were in League City, Texas for 2 1/2 years, Kent, Wash., for five years and Olympia for 17 years. When Larry retired from the government, they moved back to the Lewiston-Clarkston Valley to Clarkston and had resided there for three years.
Charlotte worked at Omark CCI for five years. In Texas, she worked for Kinder Care and then in Kent she worked in child care. After moving to Olympia, she cared for the neighbor's
twin daughters from four months old to school age. They were almost like her own and she dearly loved children.
Charlotte loved to travel and had been in every state except Alaska. In 1991, she got to visit Hawaii again and visit the people they had rented from while Larry was at Schofield Barracks. In 1992, she returned again, taking her daughter Robin with her.
In addition to her husband in Clarkston, she leaves two children, Frederick of Kent and Robin Cardenas of Middletown, Conn.; two grandchildren, Adam and Patrick Courtney of Kent; and two sisters in Scranton, Jean Mitchell and Tena Aukscunas. She was preceded in death by a sister, Marion.
Charlotte was associate conductress of the Order of the Eastern Star and a member of the Ladies of the Moose. Charlotte was active in the First Presbyterian Church of Clarkston, working with the OWLS, a senior group. Charlotte was just ordained an elder to work with the seniors. Charlotte was a licensed amateur radio operator (KC7BKH) and a member of the Lewis and Clark Amateur Radio Club.
Memorials made be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Clarkston, 1122 Diagonal St., for the Deacon's Scholarship Fund or the OWLS.
