MENDON, Ill. -- The Rev. John S. Rhine, 85, formerly pastor of Salem Lutheran Church of Mendon, died at 1:35 a.m. Wednesday (Jan. 16, 1991) in Blessing Hospital, Quincy.
Born Feb. 16, 1905, in Lewistown, Penn., Mr. Rhine was a son of Henry L. and Mary Bay Rhine. He graduated from Susquehanna University in Selensgrove, Penn., and the Chicago Theological Seminary. He was ordained in 1933.
Mr. Rhine was pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church in Wolback, Neb.; Trinity-Dalton Lutheran Church in Grace-Gurley, Neb.; Trinity Lutheran Church in Warrenville; St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Nokomis; and Salem Lutheran Church in Mendon. After his retirement in August 1972, Mr. Rhine continued to serve as an interim pastor in several churches.
A member of the Lions Club for 45 years and World Federalists, Mr. Rhine worked with scouting and was a volunteer for North Adams Home and Four Star Library. He had been district president of Western Nebraska Lutheran churches.
On July 31, 1938, Mr. Rhine married Sarah Jane Snider in Gurley, Neb. She survives.
Other survivors include one son, Wendell of Billmount, Mass.; three daughters, LaRue Ungloube of Sleepy Hollow, Marsha Johnson of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Rita Frese of Mendon; two brothers, Jake of Alsarata, Penn., and Raymond of Concord, Mass.; three sisters, Grace Shirey of Lewistown, Penn., Myra Hingley of Alexendria, Va., and Mary Dickerson of Maurertown, Va.; and six grandchildren, Carla Ericson, Andrew Ungloube, Kami Barnes, Kris Johnson and Heather and Robbie Frese.
Mr. Rhine was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.
Services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday in Salem Lutheran Church by the Mr. Jonathan Osterburg. Burial will be in Mendon Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday in the Curry-Hunter Funeral Home and from 9 a.m. until time of services Saturday in the church.
Memorials may be made to Salem Lutheran Church, St. Luke's Health Care Center in Beardstown or 4 Adam 20 Volunteer Ambulance Service.
