William was the oldest child of six born to David L. Sense and his wife, Laura E. Moore. He married Cordelia Marie Curby/Kirby. They had no children. William received a teaching degree from the University of Illinois at Champaign County campus. He was a school teacher and principal at Woodland High School in Woodland (Iroquois County), Illinois. He also was an architect. He entered the US Army in May of 1917. He served at Fort Sheridan in Illinois until December of 1917, when he was sent to Europe. He was wounded by enemy machine gun fire at Epieds, France on July 24, 1918 and taken to Base Hospital #23, where he died on July 27, 1918. His remains are buried at America Cemetery #258 in Vittel, France.
