R. E. Barclay writes in his book, "Ducktown Back in Raht's Time" that "Just prior to the Civil War, the Maughan family came to Ducktown from England, stopping first in Monroe County, Tennessee. The Maughans and another family were in Liverpool preparing to emigrate to Canada, when a representative of an English firm that was trying to develop a silver mine persuaded the two families to come to Tennessee. Nothing ever came of the silver mine, but Michael Maughan moved his family to Ducktown."
