MARY MARGARET BARBER
Birth: 22 MAR 1913 in VILLISCA, (MONTGOMERY) IA.
Death: MAR 1999 in Alantic, Cass Co., IA
Mary (Barber) Wilkinson is the daughter of Benjamin Franklin Barberand lsa Mae Beard. Mary married Donald Leverne Wilkinson, on July 31,1937.
Mary's mother, lsa Mae, got pneumonia when Mary was born; mother was sent to the hospital and a neighbor lady took care of Mary. There were 6 children all together in Mary's family. Mary's mother died on Mary's 8th Birthday in 1921. She died of -TB". Her dad also died at a later date of "TB" When her mother died, the children were farmed out. Bob & Kenny stayed with Grandpa and Uncle Bill. Mary stayed at a cousin ofher mother's and they raised her to adulthood. Millie came toAtlantic, lA. to live with an Aunt who didn't have any children.Mary's Dad tried to keep the children all at home, after their mother died, and had a housekeeper, but when she died the Aunts & uncles decided to "farm" the children out.
Grandpa Wanton was a great gardener and had lots of grapes in his backyard. Mary also says that Grandma Eliza did not move back to the Villisca area while still a young lady. When her mother died on their journey to California, Eliza took over the family and raised her brother and sisters until they could get along them selves. Only then did she herself get married. She moved to Elk port, S. Oak, where she met Wanton, and they were married there.
Robert Barber (Mary's brother), was a Judge in Oakland California area. He is now retired. Robert Barber - 2673 Hilgaard Ave. BerkleyCA. 94709. Mary thought Uncle Al lived in St. Jo_ Mo. He had a son, Ora, an only child who lived in Richmond or Stockton, Calif. Brother Robert said he (Ora) has died. Claude lived in Chadron, Neb. and had one son, Elmer.
Mary remembers she was preschool age, 4 or 5 years old when she was atGrandpa Wanton and Grandma Eliza's, and there was a huge quilt beingworked on. She remembers her mother and Edna (Gaskil) Barber workingon this quilt. Also remembers 2 boys - they had to be Everett and Paul- being there. Shortly after it seems Cliff and Edna and family movedso Mary never saw any of Cliff's children again. Everett would havebeen about 8 or 9 years old then. Thought Everett was about Kenny's(Wm.) age and Wm- Kennv was born in 1909
