The son of John & Sarah (Hill) McCormick or McCormac, in 1860 he was a laborer presumably living in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, although he is not found with certainty in that census.

A Civil War veteran, he served four terms of service:
1. Enlisted at the stated age of twenty-three in Pittsburgh April 26, 1861, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg allegedly that day (unlikely) as a private with Co. K, 13th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company August 6, 1861. Either the enlistment or muster location or perhaps the dates are likely incorrect. He is in the company register as "Macormac."
2. Enlisted at the stated age of twenty-three in Pittsburgh August 4, 1862, mustered into federal service there August 8 as 1st sergeant of Co. D, 123rd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 13, 1863. He is in the company register as "McCormick."
3. Enlisted at the stated age of twenty-six in Allegheny County July 16, 1864, mustered into federal service at Pittsburgh July 19 as captain of Co. H, 193rd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company November 9, 1864. He is in the company register as "McCormick."
4. Enlisted at the stated age of twenty-six in Pittsburgh February 7, 1865, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg March 6 with the 87th Pennsylvania Infantry as 2nd lieutenant for the second organization of Co. F. Promoted to captain to date March 6, 1865, he honorably discharged with his company June 29, 1865. He is in the company register as "McCormack."

Cause of his death is listed as "pulmonary tuberculosis" with "age" a contributing factor.
