The tombstone for Asa is inscribed:

"In / Memory of / ASA AYERS / Who died Dec 1 / 1836 / in the 76 year / of his age"

Asa seems to have on his tombstone at Plot Sect B1 Row 13: "Asa Ayers." This line of descent has generally used AYRES. The Massachusetts Town Vital Records for South Hadley, MA, image 636 (Ancestry.com) shows birth as "June 5, 1760" (or 1761; difficult to read). However, if tombstone indicates death year as 1836, age 76, then he would have been born in 1760.

Year 1777. AGE 17.

In the book "iMassachusetts Soldiers And Sailors Of The Revolutionary War/i," Volume 1, Page 95 is identified Asa's military record for the Revolutionary War from Massachusetts:

"Asa AIRES. Private, Capt. Samuel Cook's Co., Col. Woodbridge's Regt.; enlisted Aug. 17, 1777; discharged Sept. 24, 1777; service, one month, eight days; company raised to reinforce Northern Army."

Asa married about 1786, Massachusetts, to Mary WAIT, daughter of William WAIT and Mary (maiden name uncertain). A marriage record has not been located for this couple.

Asa and Mary had 10 known children. The first 3 children believed to be born in Hadley, Massachusetts and 6 children are believed to be born in Chester, Hampshire Co. (now Hampden Co.), Massachusetts before the family migrated to Ohio. In Ohio,

Year 1812.

Asa Ayres, the father, was born 1760-1761, so in 1812 about age 52.

It is KNOWN that the son, Asa Ayres, Jr DID serve in the war of 1812.

It is this contributor's belief that the service belongs to the son, and not to the father for the war of 1812.

Another source record identifies he also served another short stint in the War of 1812. Per FAG Contributor: "The Ohio Daughters list ascribes his service as with Capt. Ebenezer Harman's OH Mil." Next to his tombstone is a star memorial placed by keepers indicating this as well.
