Gold Rush Rumor:

George Valorus is thought to have visited the gold fields of California during the gold rush. [Gold Rush: 1848-1855.] As was the case in many small communities, "gold fever" struck some of its Jonesville [Hillsdale Co., MI] citizens. In 1849 a group of 16 known as the California Rovers set out for the journey to California amid much fanfare from the Village. The group wrote accounts of severe weather, blocked roads, abandoned wagons and encounters with death. By 1850, most of the men had returned home. Only a few had found any riches.

CIVIL WAR Veteran: George V. Warner enlisted in the Union Army, Co. G 17th Inf. on 6 August, 1862 at Litchfield for 3 years, age 44. Discharged for disability at Alexandria, VA on 17 Feb. 1863. His regiment was known as the "Stonewall Regiment".

Litchfield, Hillsdale, MI History:

The City of Litchfield is known for its unique history in this rich and productive farming area of Michigan. Litchfield's first inhabitants were the Pottawattamie Indians. The Pottawattamie Indians who roamed the countryside when the settlers first arrived were the Leathernose family of the Baw Beese tribe. Settlers eventually moved to this area from eastern portions of the United States. The City first went by the name of Columbus but was changed to Litchfield in 1837. The first school in Litchfield Township was also established in 1837. The Village of Litchfield was incorporated in 1877.

The surrounding country for miles was heavily timbered with forests of beech, maple, linn, whitewood, white and black ash, with considerable oak and black walnut. Timber was especially handsome. Deer, wild turkeys, wolves, bears, and cats, and many other species of wild fowls and animals, abounded on every hand.

In 1836, Michigan was known in the eastern states as "the land of savages, snakes and beasts".
