Clara Ann Dawson was born Jan 23, 1884 in Illinois to Isaac William and Mary Elizabeth Loving Dawson. She grew up in Coles County. In 1900 she married Sylvester McComas, also of Illinois. They lived in Charleston.

By 1910, they had three children: Irene Daisy and Virgil Paul both born in Charleston, Coles, Illinois, and Howard Frank born in San Diego, San Diego, California. They had also divorced. Clara and the children lived in San Diego with her parents Isaac and Elizabeth Dawson. Her father Isaac was killed by a drunk driver in 1912 while working for the San Diego Water Department.

About 1915, Clara married Frank Jenkins. By the 1920 census, taken January 8, the couple had one son together: Lloyd. Irene, Virgil and Howard lived with them. Frank Sr. died on February 28, 1920. His second son Frank Jr was born two weeks after his death.

February 19, 1924, Clara married Ira Thompson. At the time of the 1930 census they lived in San Francisco, California and Clara's sons Lloyd and Frank lived with them. Her other three children were married and living in San Diego. Ira Thompson died October 12, 1935. After Ira Thompson's death, Clara returned to San Diego to be near her extended family She remained there until her death.

Clara died May 7, 1950 and was buried at Mt Hope Cemetery in San Diego where her parents and husband Frank were also interred. Son Howard McComas is buried with her. His grave is unmarked.
