Sylvester McComas was born March 1, 1881, the son of Ben and Lucinda McComas of Charleston, Coles, Illinois. He joined siblings Henrietta, Oscar, Mary, Fanny and John. He may have had other siblings. These were the children listed as living with Ben and Lucinda in the 1880 Federal census, the year preceding Sylvester's birth.

Sylvester was not listed in a Federal census until 1900 at which time he was married and living away from home.

On March 3, 1900, he married Clarinda Ann Dawson of Charleston, Coles, Illinois. At the time of the 1900 census they lived in Charleston near both of their families. Clara was listed as Anna in the census. The couple had two children born in Illinois: Irene Daisy and Virgal Paul.

By 1905 they had moved to San Diego, San Diego, California where their third child, Howard was born. They divorced shortly thereafter. The children continued to live with their mother Clara and maternal grandparents, Isaac and Elizabeth Dawson in San Diego until their mother married Frank Jenkins about 1917.

Daughter Irene was married at the McComas home in San Diego in October of 1921. By that time, Sylvester had remarried, but his wife is not named in the wedding announcement in the San Diego Union newspaper. There is a Sylvester McComas married to wife Clara found in the 20's living in San Diego, but this Sylvester is too old (according to his wedding announcement) to have been this Sylvester McComas.

No records have been found for Sylvester until he applied for a Social Security Account Number on September 2, 1941. At that time, he lived in Chicago, Illinois and was unemployed. In 1942 he registered for the WWII draft; he lived at Cabazon, Riverside, California. At the time of his death on January 21, 1956, Sylvester lived in Reseda, Los Angeles, California. His death certificate lists his occupation as retired Deputy Sheriff and his marital status as widowed.

This information comes from census records, Sylvester's death certificate, and the San Diego Union newspaper. Information here was provided by Jodine L Bergen. Please contact me if you have corrections or additional information about Sylvester and his life after his divorce from Clara Dawson.
