Marietta (Mary) Spiggle Michael died at home in Blacksburg on Friday, February 18, 2005, at age 100. She was born in Roanoke County on June 6, 1904, to Hattie Campbell and James A. W. Spiggle. She

was an alumna of Longwood College in Farmville, Class of 1926. She taught public school in Vinton and Salem.

Mary married Rudolph Dixon Michael on December 13, 1929. They made their home in Blacksburg in the early 1930's.

She worked for the Newman Library at Virginia Tech before her children were born and again later until her retirement in 1970. At the time of her death, she was the oldest living member of the Blacksburg Baptist Church.

Mary was predeceased by her husband and four siblings, brothers, Frank and James Spiggle, sisters Evelyn Spiggle and Anne Spiggle Cauley.

She will be lovingly missed by her two daughters, Anne Wood and husband Lynn, of Mississippi and Jean Shick and husband Malcolm, of Maine. Also she is survived by her grandchildren, Michael Wood, William Wood, and Laura Shick; and a great-granddaughter, Lucy Wood; nieces Laura M. Burrows of Blacksburg, Susan Spiggle of Connecticut, and Betty Cauley of Lynchburg; nephews V. B. Cauley, Jr., of Newport and James Spiggle of Roanoke; sister-in-law Eleanor M. Spiggle of Roanoke; and three great-nephews, Morris Burrows, Michael Burrows and Benjamin Cauley.

Her family extends deep appreciation to Carilion Hospice Services of New River Valley and especially to her loving and devoted caregivers.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Blacksburg Baptist Church, 550 North Main Street, Blacksburg, VA or to Carilion Hospice Services of NRV, 707 Randolph Street, Suite 251, Radford, VA.

Family and friends may call at her residence. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements by McCoy Funeral Home, 150 Country Club Drive, SW, Blacksburg, VA.
