James McCorkle Spiggle, 80, of Roanoke, died Friday afternoon, September 7, 2001. He was born in Salem on February 12, 1921.

He graduated from Andrew Lewis High School and received his B.S. degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1942. During World War II he served as a Major in the Army Corps of Engineers in the Pacific Campaign. After the war, Mr. Spiggle returned to Roanoke to take engineering positions with the American Viscos Corporation and Roanoke Iron & Bridgeworks, eventually retiring as director of marketing for the Better Business Bureau of Roanoke. He was a member of the Christ Episcopal Church, the VPI German Club, the Lion's Club and the Rotary Club.

Surviving are his beloved wife, Eleanor Messick Spiggle; his son, James Exum of Fairfax; daughter, Susan of Columbia, Conn.; a sister, Mary Michaels of Blacksburg; his sister-in-law, Anne Messick Meek of Roanoke; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted at Christ Episcopal Church on Tuesday at 11 a.m. followed by interment at the columbarium of the church. Members of the family will receive friends afterwards in the church parish hall. The family suggests that memorials be made to the charity of your choice. Arrangements by Oakey's Roanoke Chapel.
