Wells Franklin Sanders, 89, of Langley, Wash., died Jan. 9, 1999 at home. He was born February 12, 1909 in Douglas, Arizona to Joseph L. and Gladys J. Sanders.

He is survived by his wife, Nell of Langley; daughters Sandi Howlett of Anchorage, Alaska, Carol Pollard Briggs of Salt Lake City, Utah; Cherie Schlierman of Santa Monica, Calif.; sons Grant Jones of Langley, Wash.; Ralph of Inglewood, Calif.; 22 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by daughter Arlene.

Wells was a retired heavy-duty mechanic. At retirement, he was foreman and IML shop steward. He actually retired three times, the last at age 75 at Kaiser Steel.

He was active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, holding the office of High Priest. He served in many areas, including teaching and working with the Boy Scouts of America.

As a youth, he lived on the Arizona-Mexico border and literally saw the war between the Federales and Revolutionaries as he sat on the schoolhouse roof.

His family was driven out of Mexico, where they had a ranch, by Pancho Villa. The family later moved to Utah and then back to Arizona.

After a car-pedestrian accident in 1996, Wells and Nell moved to Langley, Washington.

A private family graveside service as held in St. George, Utah on January 13.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to a charity of choice. Douglas Dispatch (AZ) - Monday, February 8, 1999

(This obituary does not list his children from his first marriage: Wilma, Edward Helen, Barbara, Youvonne and Thelma.)
