Nobel Prize laureate Nikolass Tinbergen, FRS, was born in the Netherlands to parents Dirk C. and Jeannette (van Eek) Tinbergen. He was the third in a family of four boys and one girl.
Niko Tinbergen read Biology at Leiden University. In 1932 Niko obtained his doctoral degree, marrying Elisabeth A. Rutten the same year. The couple had two sons and three daughters. In 1949 he established the Animal Behaviour Research Group at the University of Oxford, England. Oxford remained his home until his death.
Elisabeth "Lies" Tinbergen died in 1990.

Niko's brother, Jan Tinbergen received the first Bank of Sweden Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel, in 1969, sharing this honor with Ragnar Frisch.
A younger brother, Lukas, ornithologist and Professor of Zoology at the University of Groningen, died at the age of 39, 1 Sep 1955.
