Luuk Tinbergen was interested in Nature Studies from a young age. In 1933 he started studying Biology at the Leiden University. He finished the study in 1939 and started working as an assistant for the Zoological Station in Den Helder. Here he started focusing on ornithology (study of birds). After World War II, he started working for the Institute for Applied Biological Research in Nature. In 1946 he was promoted cum laude to Doctor at Leiden University. In 1949, he became a lecturer at the University of Groningen, where he also researched ornithology. On 1 September 1955, Luuk Tinbergen committed suicide, ending his life at 39 years old.
