Dirk Tinbergen studied Mechanics at Delft University of Technology. He became engineer. In 1963, the Municipal Council of The Hague named him director of the Municipal Energy Factory. He married Joanna Christina "Jo" van der Vloodt in 1934, but they divorced in 1937. During World War II, Jo was in the Communist Resistance in The Hague. She later remarried another Communist Resistance fighter August Otto Wilhelm Levin, who became mayor of Loitz in the GDR.
