JESS KING: Sturgis; former Meade County law officer died Wednesday at the Faith Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. King was born 9 August 1875 in
Minnesota. He came to South Dakota at the age of 6 with his parents who
settled at Elm Springs. He worked at various ranches as a cowboy and
participated in the roundup of 1902. From 1920 to 1939 he served as a deputy
sheriff, living at Sturgis, Plainview and Faith. King's last deputy assignment
was at Faith and at the time he served with the Sturgis police department. He
was married in 1899 at Rapid City to Betsy Simons who preceded him in death
in 1956. King was a member of the Cowboys of 1902. Survivors include a daughter: Mrs. Madeline McDonald, Sturgis; 2 sons: Louis and Elmer, both Plainview; and Franklin, Los Angeles CA; a sister Mrs. Artie Marington, Lakeview OR and 10 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Final rites are to be held here Saturday. The services will be conducted by the F O Jolley Funeral Home with the Rev. Charles Markman officiating. Burial will be in the Bear Butte Cemetery.
