Greene Clay Adkins was taken suddenly ill at the home of his son William, in Blocton, Iowa, and passed away on the 6th of July, 1917. He was born Sept. 1, 1837 in Pulaski County, Kentucky, son of Wyatt and Mary Ann Miller. His family moved to Monroe County, Indiana in 1840. He moved with his parents and siblings to Clarke County, Iowa in 1856. He enlisted in Co. B, 6th Iowa Volunteer Infantry on July 1, 1861. He enlisted in and around Tennessee and Mississippi. Captured and in prision at Jackson, Mississippi he escaped with some other soldiers and made there way back to the Union lines; after which he returned to his home in Hopeville, Iowa. Later he re-enlisted in Co. H, 9th Calvary Regiment, Iowa where he served two and a half years, having served in all over four years. Greene Clay Adkins married Catherine Shields August 27, 1863 in Clarke County, Iowa while on leave from the Army. They were married for 53 years. To this union were born two sons and three daughters.
