Mary Ann Adkins Ketchum was born in Monroe County, Indiana. Her mother died when she was two years of age 4 days after the birth of a son. Her father married a second time in 1852 and the family moved to Doyle, Clarke County, Iowa in 1856. She married Alonzo Ketchum on September 1, 1867 in Hopeville, Clarke County, Iowa. Mary and Alonzo Ketchum came to Thomas County, Kansas in 1886 and settled on their homestead in the Otter-borne district, about a dozen miles northwest of Colby. This was a new country then. Its virgin soil had not yet been touched by the plow. Here and there over the grassy plain could be seen lingering herds of antelopes. Schools and churches were yet to be organized and maintained. To the Ketchum's and to the many others of that day, it was a glorious opportunity and adventure. The Ketchum's home in the early days was noted for its hospitality, and no matter how discouraged were the neighbors or strangers who came to the house, they went away with a new hope and much happier than when they came. The Ketchum's had seven children, all born in Hopeville, Iowa.
