Robert was the son of Wyatt Adkins and his 2nd wife Mary Ann Parker Witt Adkins. He came to Clarke County, IA at age of 2 years.

He had a brother David Byers Adkins, also buried at Hopeville. He also had half-siblings from his father's 1st marriage to Mary Ann Miller.

Robert married Mary "Jennie" Kinyoun, daughter of James E. Kinyoun, on 6 November 1874.

Their children were Bethy B. Adkins, Minnie A. Adkins, Mamie L. Adkins, Freddie B. Adkins, twin son and daughter born 8 March 1881 in Doyle Twp, Clarke Co, IA and a daughter born there 19 June 1884[2 of them were Halley D. and Opal E.Adkins].

The funeral home marker is missing the name and has only dates 1854-1938 for Robert Adkins.
