HAGERSTOWN, Md. - Herb McAlister Shatzer, 78, of 138 Northcrest Road, formerly of Chambersburg, died Saturday at home.

He was retired from Fairchild Industries and previously worked for Grove Manufacturing.

He was an elder, deacon and clerk of session of Central Presbyterian Church and Sunday school teacher.

He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, a member of the Hagerstown American Legion and Fairchild Pegasus Club and a graduate of Chambersburg High School.

Surviving are his wife, Lenora Peiffer Shatzer; a son, Jack B. in Mechanicsburg; three daughters, Beverly Benedict of Waynesboro, Christine Stoner of York, and Wendy Staley of Hagerstown; a brother, J. Grant Shatzer Jr. of Carlisle; three sisters, Madeline Raifsnider and Alma Knauff, both of Chambersburg, and Peggy McNew of Fayetteville; 10 grandchildren and 18 great-grand children.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at his church. Burial will be in Lincoln Cemetery, Chambersburg. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Sellers Funeral Home Chambersburg, and from 10 to 11a.m. Wednesday at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to Washington County Hospice, 101 E. Baltimore St., Hagerstown 21740, or his church, 40 L.W.W., Chambersburg 17201.
