Lewis S. Allen was born March 19, 1850 in Petersburg, Menard County, Illinois. His parents were John W. and Melinda J. (Watkins) Allen. Lewis S. Allen started farming at the age of 22 operating a tract of rented land at Eight Mile Grove for two years. In the fall of 1875 he purchased 160 acres in Layton Township and through well directed busines ability, added to his farm, till it comprised 348 acres. He erected all the buildings on the farm and planted all the trees. he was extensive cattle feeder, principally Herefords.
On 19th of March, 1973 Mr. Allen was united in marriage to Miss Harriet E. Trailer of Cass County and a daughter of William Trailer, a prominent farmer of that county. Mr. and Mrs. Allen were the parents of nine children; eight of whom survivied in 1907: Ada B. (Mrs. Shelton Allen), Sarah (Mrs.William H. Burkey),
Lorene (Mrs. Fred M. Moon), Eleanor, Effie, Ira, William and Avery.
In politics, Mr. Allen was a Democrat. He served two terms as township trustee, was a member of the school board for several years and was assocated with the following lodges: Grove Lodge No. 292, A.F. and A.M. of Marne, Berlin Lodge, O.E.S., and Marne Lodge of the Ancient Order of United Workmen. Funeral to be Held Tomorrow - The funeral services for the late Lewis S. Allen will be held tomorrow, Wednesday at two o'clock p.m. at the M.P. church at Marne and the interment made in the Marne cemetery. The Masons will have charge of the services at the grave and the pall bearers will be from among their number. There will be both honorary and active pall bearers.

It was a Big Funeral - Services for Late L.S. Allen at Marne Yesterday Were Well Attended - Masons Had Charge at Grave - Two Ministers Officiated:
The funeral services for the late L.S. Allen, as stated in this paper yesterday were held Yesterday afternoon at the M.P. Church in Marne, and were largely attended. The Active pall bearers were Chris Sorenson, Chas Grossman, John Swinburne, Jesse Thompson, Alfred Long, George Grau, J.O. Berry and Water Potts. The honorary pall bearers were W.C. Harvey, A.W. Sarsfield, W.G. Nunn, E. Wheeler, Sr. and J.W. Berry of Marne and R.A. Berry, Stewart Tailor and D. Burkey of Atlantic. The officiating ministers were Rev. Chambers of Grand Junction, who preached the sermon and Rev. Frank Butterfield of the Marne M.P church who assisted. The Marne Masonic fraternity had charge of the services at the grave and many Masons from this city and Walnut attended the services. There was a wealth of floral offerings, attesting the love and esteem of a large circle of friends.
