Eliza Jane Swallow, youngest child of James Swallow and Elizabeth Goodworth, was born on May 10, 1846 in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. She came to Winnebago County, Wisconsin in 1855 and spent the remainder of her life there. She died at her home in the village of Omro, Wisconsin at 7:45 a.m. on September 5, 1941, at the age of 95. She was the oldest resident of Omro and one of the oldest residents of Winnebago County, and was affectionately known throughout the village as "Grandma" Stead.

On May 10, 1863 she married Edward Stead in Ripon, Wisconsin. They were married by Rev. Woodhead, who had been Edward's Sunday School teacher when he was a boy in England. Her husband preceded her in death in 1907. Also preceding her in death were two sons, Joseph E. and Lester Jeremiah; a sister, Sarah McCartney; and brothers Joseph and Benjamin Swallow. At the time of her death, she was survived by three sons: William John, James S., and Harry; ten grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Monday, September 8, 1941 at the Plansky Funeral Home, with the Rev. Ralph Donaldson officiating. She was buried with her husband in the family plot at the Omro Cemetery.
