Lester Jeremiah Stead was born April 4, 1875 in Utica, Wisconsin, the second-youngest of five sons born to Edward Stead and Eliza Jane Swallow. In 1895 he moved with his family to Zion, Wisconsin.

He married Nettie Maria Poler in Oshkosh, Wisconsin on March 30, 1898. They resided in the Omro, Wisconsin area until 1908, when they moved to North Dakota. They lived both at Cottonwood and at Parshall, where Lester was the Assistant Manager for the Parshall Farmers Cooperative Elevator Company.

In 1918, he and his son Irving enrolled in Embalming College at Chicago, Illinois. While there, he contracted diphtheria and died on February 22, 1918.

At the time of his death, he was survived by his mother, Eliza; wife Nettie; son Irving; and brothers William, Joseph, James and Harry and their families.

He is buried in the Stead Family plot in Omro Cemetery.
