Joe grew up in southwestern Missouri, spending the summers working on family farms in northwestern Missouri. He was a genuine cowboy and became foreman of a large horse ranch in western Nebraska. In 1928 he married the local school teacher. They farmed in eastern Nebraska. The Great Depression forced them to abandon the farm. They came to National City and Joe worked for the water company serving south bay area. He served as foreman until he retired. He was active in the Methodist Church. He loved to fresh water fish and garden.
