Jason's father died during the War Between the States while Jason was very young. He was reared by his mother and his Tinsley grandparents, together with his Jackson grandparents and relatives. He was a farmer most of his life, but he did work in the mill at Piedmont when the family lived there briefly. He was faithful to his churches, Ebenezer Welcome Baptist Church and Gowensville Baptist Church. After his first wife, Laura (she was the mother of all the children), died, he remarried Sallie Settle Hall; she is the mother most of the younger children remembered. There were 11 children of the first marriage, none of the second. The 11 of the first marriage were: Nolen, Nettie, Burk, Josie (infant death), Montie, Maggie, Grace, Rowley, Frank, Lois and J.B.
