Coy Ray “Dick” Abbott, 78, Delphi, died at 9:56 p.m. Thursday (March 29, 2001) at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Delphi.

Mr. Abbott worked for the former Bill Lee John Deere dealership, Delphi, as an implement salesman, then for Pearson’s, Delphi, delivering bottled gas and fertilizer. He also worked for Clawson Appliances, Delphi, for several years before retiring.

He was born in Somerset, Ky., Oct. 26, 1922, to Coy T. and Mable Claunch Abbott.

He was a 1940 graduate of Oxford High School, Oxford, Ind., and attended Purdue University. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He attended the First Assembly of God Church, Lafayette and helped coach Little League and Pony League baseball teams.

His marriage was July 26, 1959, in Delphi, to the former Patricia A. Phillips. She survives. Other survivors include two sons, Brian Abbott and Shawn Abbott, both of Huntington; two daughters, Mrs. Kevin (Gayle) Conner and Jayne A. Abbott, both of Delphi; two brothers, Arnold Abbott, Delphi, and Dave Abbott, Silver Lake; three sisters, Mrs. Phill (Fern “Jackie”) Stiever, Elkhart, Geneva Dowell, Lafayette, and Mrs. Robert (Louise) Comer, Mulberry; one half-sister, Helen Dean Girkey, Merritt, Fla.; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.

Calling is from 3-8 p.m. Sunday at the Abbott Funeral Home, 421 E. Main St., Delphi, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday with. Pastor Greg Hackett officiating.

Burial will be at the Masonic Cemetery, Delphi, where Delphi American Legion will perform military graveside rites.

Preferred memorials are to the Delphi Public Library, in care of Abbott Funeral Home, 421 E. Main St., Delphi.
