Charles C. Burton was born to Henry Burton & Mary (Williams) Burton. He came from a family of 14 children. His father, Henry was a carpenter and an ordained minister...Mine Lick Baptist Church.
He married Sarah Dyer, the daughter of John Dyer and Mary "Polly" Youngblood when he was 31 years old. Charles & Sarah had seven children:Mahala Angeline Burton being my great, grandmother. The other children were John Ike; Matilda Frances, James Edward, Henry Clay, Wm. Stoke, and Millard Burton.

Charles C. Burton was killed in the Civil War.. pension & war Records from National Archives. #102,239....Co.d of the 1st regiment of the Tenn.Mounted Infantry Volunteers. Charles died from an accidental gun shot wound he received while in camp at Carthage, Smith Co, Tenn. On 28 apr 1864. The incident as reported by Capt. F.M.. Anderson states he was well acquainted With Charles and was a neighbor of his: "He was sitting by his tent talking with a comrade, he was shot accidently by a soldier who was cleaning or oiling his pistol, his pistol went off, the bullet striking Charles C. Burton in the temple and killed him instantly." A description of Charles from his military enlistment describes him as 5 ft. 9" Tall, of fair complexion with dark eyes and light hair.
He was 51 years old when he died and left a widow with 7 children ranging in age from 20 down to 5 years. God bless them all for all their heartache and struggles.
Originally buried in Toy Herrin Cemetery, Dekalb County, which cemetery was removed in 1948 to Mt. Holly Cemetery due to development of the Center Hill Dam.
