"Emery Elwood Smith Funeral Services"
Final rites for Emery Elwood Smith, 74, owner of the Smith Brothers Blacksmith shop here, were held Monday afternoon at 3:30 at the Wilder-Bruce funeral home. The Rev. Leonard E. Deaver, pastor of the First Evangelical United Brethren church, officiated.
Burial was in Memorial Park cemetery.
During the service Wayne Rasmussen sang "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" and "It Is Well With My Soul." Accompaniment was played by Mrs. John Brown.
Honorary pallbearers were Martin Forbes, E. P. Johnson, Elmer Kirchner, J. B. Cross and Harry Kurtz. Active pallbearers were Charles Keesey, Hugh Sperry, Emil Rowe, Roy Thompson, George Hale and George Fanning.
Mrs. C. J. Simmons, Mrs. Donald Morrison, Mrs. Albert Lawson and Mrs. Charles Prieskorn arranged the many flowers.
Attending the service in groups were members of the Women's Christian Temperance Union, Daughters of Union Veterans and the Rebekah lodge.
Relatives and friends who attended from a distance included Mrs. Addie Roberts of Rolfe; Mr. and Mrs. George Fanning and Arthur Hulburd of Humboldt; Mr. and Mrs. Ralph E. Hawkins of Omaha, Neb., Oliver H. Smith of Arlington, Va.; Miss Mavis Ann Smith of Chicago, Ill.; and Miss Wilda M. Smith of Avoca, Ia.
Mr. Smith died last Saturday at Lutheran Hospital after a several weeks' illness.
Born Nov. 22, 1876, in Iowa, Mr. Smith was the son of the late Mrs. Reta Smith. He came to Fort Dodge in 1897 to become associated with the Fleek blacksmith shop.
On July 2, 1900, he was married to Miss Lulubel Hale.
The couple has resided in Fort Dodge ever since . All but three years of that time they have made their home at 1812 Seventh avenue north. In July of 1950 they observed their golden wedding anniversary.
Mr. Smith was the owner of the Smith Brothers Blacksmith shop here. He served as state president of the Blacksmith and Welders association in 1935-1936, and he served as president of the national organization in 1937.
He was a member of the Men's club of the First Congregational church and an honorary member of the W.C.T.U. His favorite hobby was gardening.
Surviving are his wife and the following children: Mrs. E. A. McKinney of Eugene, Ore.; Mrs. Ralph E. Hawkins of Omaha, Neb.; Oliver H. Smith of Arlington, Va.; Wilda M. Smith of Avoca, Ia.; and Mavis Ann Smith of Chicago., Ill.
Eleven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, a brother, Charles H. A. Smith of Taft, Tex.; and a sister, Mrs. Paul Holmes, Sr. of Menaken, N.D., also survive.
Mr. Smith was preceded in death by a son, E. Elwood Smith; his mother and one brother.
[E.E. Smith, Sr. wrote his name Emery E. Smith, whereas E.E. Smith, Jr. wrote his name E. Elwood Smith. They did not use the terms Jr. or Sr.]
