~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
He was born either in York County, Pennsylvania, or Harford County, Maryland. His military records claim the former, the 1870 and 1880 census both list Pennsylvania, but the 1860 census has Maryland, and two older brothers were born in Harford County. The son of Ezekiel Worthington, In 1860 he was a laborer living with his family in Lower Chanceford Township, York County, and by 1864 stood 5' 5" tall with black hair, black eyes, and a black complexion.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of eighteen in Lancaster January 31, 1864, and mustered into federal service at Philadelphia February 4 as a private with Co. H, 25th U. S. Colored Troops. Promoted to corporal July 6, 1865, he honorably discharged with his company December 6, 1865, in Philadelphia. His brothers Ezekiel and George served in the same regiment in companies F and E, respectively.
He married Rebecca Jane Irons or Jones and fathered Anna Rebecca (b. @1877). The death date shown above is unconfirmed, but at least one of his children applied for a minor's pension on April 9, 1891.
Typical of the times, his actual age is a mystery. He is in the 1860 census as an eleven-year-old, the 1870 census at the age of twenty-seven, and the 1880 as a thirty-three-year-old, none of which coincides with his claimed age at enlistment.
