Elizabeth was the daughter of William H. Spragg and his wife, Jane E. Burnett. She was born in St. John's, Kings County, New Brunswick, CANADA and died near Wadena, Minnesota. Elizabeth married James Elijah Chase on March 23, 1856 in Buchanan County, Iowa. They had nine children; six sons and three daughters.

US CENSUS: Year: 1870 Pocahontas County, Iowa; Lizard Township: page 22 (62). Listed under Elijah Chase age 51 born in Connecticut and wife, Elizabeth age 34 born in New Brunswick, Canada. Children listed are: Marquis 17 born in Canada, Converse 13 born in Iowa, Alfretta 11 born in Iowa, Tamson 10 born in Iowa, Frederick 6 born in Iowa, Francis 4 born in Iowa, Eunice 2 born in Iowa, and Joseph 1 born in Iowa.

OBITUARY NOTICE: Rolfe Reveille, Rolfe, Pocahontas County, Iowa. Article dated Thursday, January 20, 1898. Excerpt, "... In Memory ... Of Mrs. Elizabeth Chase, who died at the residence of her son William on January 15,1898, near Wadena, Minnesota. The deceased was born in New Brunswick near St Johns, September 6, 1836. Her maiden name was Sprague and she moved with her parents to Buchanan county, Iowa, in 1851 and was married to Elijah Chase of Buchanan county. They moved to Pocahontas county in 1809, from there to Buena Vista county in 1878 and back to Pocahontas in 1881. Her husband died in 1895. She moved to Oak Valley, Minnesota, on October 26,1897, where three of her sons are living, Frank, Joseph and William. She had been sick only three weeks. When the Grim Messenger came he found her prepared and her lamp brightly burning. She had nine children. Eight live to mourn her loss and one has welcomed her. The living are Converse Chase, Mrs. Alfretta Logan, Mrs. Tomson Gilman, Frederick Chase, Frank Chase, Joseph Chase, Adrian Chase, Mrs. Eunice Chase and William Chase. The funeral was held at the residence of her son Frank on Sunday, January 16, near Wadena, Minnesota. Rev. Mitchell of Woodside preached the funeral sermon. Her sons Frederick and Adrian accompanied the remains from Wadena to Havelock, Iowa, where they were laid to rest beside her husband in the Havelock cemetery. ..."
