He began his employment in the the coal business. At the commencement of the Civil war he enlisted and was made quartermaster of the 7th Pennsylvania cavalry and he participated in many engagements. Upon his return home he resumed his business as a coal operator and in 1881 he was a railroad contractor, and assisting in the construction of the Buffalo extension of the Lehigh Valley, the Cumberland Valley, the Schuylkill Valley, the Pennsylvania, and the Philadelphia & Reading railroads.
