Velma A. Curtis Toms, 81, Atherton, died Monday, June 15, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.

Mrs. Toms was born Sept. 16, 1916, in Webb City, Mo., and moved to Atherton in 1929. She was a certified nursing assistant, retiring in 1984, and was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Nephi C. Curtis in January 1978.

Her survivors include her husband, Howard Toms of the home; two sons, Lester C. "Bud" Curtis, Independence, and M. Gene Curtis, Blue Springs; three daughters, Clara M. Bailey and Maudie Curtis, both of Independence, and Linda Curtis, Durant, Okla.; 15 grandchildren; and 34 great-grandchildren.
