Nephi Carlyle Curtis, 64, of the Atherton community in rural Independence, died Thursday at the Independence Sanitarium. He was born in Oblong, Ill., and moved to Independence in 1930. He moved to Warrensburg, Mo., in 1969, and returning to this area a year ago. Mr. Curtis was a farmer before he retired. He was a member of the RLDS Atherton Congregation. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Velma Curtis of the home; two sons, Lester Carlyle Curtis, Warrensburg, and Gene Curtis, 1919 Salem Drive, Independence; three daughters, Mrs. Clara May Bailey, 2005 Quincy; Mrs. Maude Toms, Independence, and Mrs. Linda McGregor, Las Vegas, Nev.; five brothers, Harold M. Curtis, 3512 Drumm, and Stanley L. Curtis, 666 N. Spring, both of Independence; Glenard Curtis, Smithville; James E. Curtis, Tennessee, and L. Paul Curtis, Pennsylvania; 17 grandchildren and a great-grandson. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church; burial in Mound Grove Cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. tonight at the Speaks Chapel.
