Born in Chetopa, Kansas. The son of Mary Jane Gilbert. His World War I selective service registration card lists him as living in Wagoner County, Oklahoma between 1917-1918. The 1920 U.S. Census shows him as a 24 year old living in Gatesville, Wagoner County, Oklahoma with his wife Ivy and 1 year old son Ernest. Also living with the family is Ivy's father Samuel T. Denison. The 1930 U.S. Census shows him living in Porter, Wagoner County, Oklahoma with his wife and the following children: son Ernest, age 11; son Robert, age 9; son Donald, age 7; and son James, Jr. Also living with the family is James' mother Mary Jane Gilbert, age 74. The 1940 U.S. Census records the family as still living in Porter, Oklahoma. The family members include James and Iva, and sons Robert, Donald and Jimmy, with the addition of daughter Wilma and son Jesse. James A. Gilbert, 68, former resident of the Porter-Coweta area, died at this home in Tulsa of a heart attack on Monday, July 15, 1963.

A native of Chetopa, Kansas, he had lived in Tulsa for 13 years and worked in the Sand Springs area prior to his retirement.

Survivors are his wife, Ivy, of the home; four sons, Robert Lee and Donald Gilbert, both of Tulsa, James Alvin Gilbert of Mannford, and Jess E. Gilbert of Red Fork; one daughter, Mrs. Wilma David of Tulsa; four brothers, Will Gilbert of Tulsa, H.E. And T.H. Gilbert, both of Coweta and Ovie Gilbert of Sand Springs; also 13 grandchildren.
