Lena was the fifth of nine children born to Norwegian immigrants Ole and Martha Williksen. She was raised on a farm in the community of Thor, IA which her parents established. She married Edward Gustav Gangestad October 4, 1898 in Thor, IA. She travelled with her husband to various states in his lumber business and was the mother of three children, Elmer Lester, Olaf Williksen, and Marjorie. She died 18 days after giving birth to Marjorie.
