The son of Jacob & Christiana (Houser) Dorwart, in 1860 he was a laborer living with and/or working for farmer Adam Keller in Manheim Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, although there were two Benjamin Dorwarts of similar age living in Lancaster County at the time. By 1865, he stood 5' 4" tall and had light hair and blue eyes.


A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of eighteen at Lancaster February 27, 1865, mustered into federal service that day as a private with Co. B, 79th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 12, 1865. He is in the company register as "Benjamin F. Dowart" but applied for his disability pension using the name seen here.


He married Sarah Shindle ca. 1872 and fathered Emma Alvira (b. @1874 - married Paul S. Eshleman), Christie E. (b. 04/23/77, d. 1891), Benjamin Franklin (b. 08/04/82), and Harry Lester (b. 08/29/92). Cause of his death is listed as "valvular heart disease." His middle initial is variously reported as "F", "D," and "S."
