OBITUARY:

Annette Louise Sanford Demaree 55, Indianapolis, passed away on October 7, 2003, surrounded by the family and friends she loved. She was born July 24, 1948 in Indianapolis, Indiana to Wilbur and Ruth Sanford, lifelong residents of Speedway. Upon graduation from Speedway High School, she married her childhood sweetheart, Merrill Demaree. Through the years as she raised her family and worked a full-time job, Annette completed an undergraduate degree in Elementary Education at Indiana University, Bloomington. Additionally, she earned two Masters Degrees, the first in Elementary Education from Butler University and the second a Masters of Library Science from Indiana University, Bloomington. Her early career included working as an underwriter for Farm Bureau Insurance and as an assistant in the Financial Aid Department of Indiana University Extension at Indianapolis. She taught at the elementary level in the Greensburg Schools and the Indianapolis Public Schools and taught nursery school in the "Mother's Day Out" program at Speedway Christian Church. In 1979 she joined the staff at the Indianapolis-Marion Public Library as a library assistant at the Broad Ripple Library. Having completed her library degree, she then worked as a Children's Librarian at the Eagle Branch Library and the Haughville Branch Library until leaving in 1985 to become the Manager of Children's Services at the Speedway Public Library. In 1988, she accepted dual responsibilities as Manager of Children's Service and Branch Manager at the White River Library, a part of the Johnson County Public Library. At the time of her death, Annette was Library Manager at the White River Library. She was also responsible for the staff in Services to Special Populations and the Adult Learning Center and acted as Liaison to the Friends of Johnson County Public Library. Blessed were the countless children and adults who shared in her story times & had the pleasure of calling her "my librarian". And so fortunate were the many colleagues she befriended and mentored over the years of her too short life. Annette was an active participant in many organizations being a member of several for more than thirty years. She was most proud of her involvement in the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, Eagle Creek Chapter and the National Society of Children of the American Revolution, Little Eagle Creek Society. She served as State DAR Treasurer and State Registrar, organizing numerous events and conferences within the state society. She was President of the local CAR Society and a Senior Officer in the Indiana Society of CAR. She belonged to a number of other patriotic organizations as well, including the Society of Indiana Pioneers, Daughters of the Founders and Patriots, Kentuckiana Chapter, Daughters of the American Colonists, Daughters of Colonial Wars, Daughters of the Union, Colonial Dames XVII Century, Thomas Macy Chapter, and Dames of the Court of Honor. She was a member of the Indiana Historical Society, the American Library Association, the Indiana Library Federation, the International Reading Association, Storytelling arts of Indiana, the American Association of University Women, the Indiana University Alumni Association and the Speedway Christian Church. Annette is survived by her husband of 37 years, Merrill Demaree; sons, Jeffrey Demaree and Aaron Demaree; daughters-in-law, Kimberly Demaree and Debbie Demaree; one grandson, Elijah Quinn Demaree; and two granddaughters, Addison Demaree and Brittany Marshall.
