OBITUARY:

Wilbur John, "Butch" Sanford 99, Speedway, passed away on June 22, 2003 surrounded by the family he loved. He was born November 9, 1903 on the family farm in Hancock County, Indiana to Jesse and Anna Sanford. He served 40 years in the United States Naval Reserve seeing active duty during World War II. During the war he served his country in the Pacific and in Europe. In July of 1937 Butch served on one of the nine Naval ships that searched for Amelia Earhart in the Pacific. He was retired from the Naval Reserve in 1963 as Chief Boatswain's Mate. Prior to World War II he held various jobs until he took over the management of his father's gravel pit in Speedway. Upon his father's death, the gravel pit was sold and the house which was built by Butch and his father was moved to its present location in Speedway in 1939. After World War II, he began working for Culligan Water Conditioning in Indianapolis where he continued working until 1995 at the young age of 92. Even though he had known his wife Ruth Harlan Sanford since they were teenagers in Cumberland, they did not marry until 1939. They had 56 wonderful years together, with Ruth preceding him in death in 1995. He was an active participant in many organizations being a member of several for more than fifty years. He was most proud when he received his seventy-five-year recognition from the Cumberland Lodge 726, F.&A.M. in 2002. Another honor that he received was his induction into the Cumberland Honors Park in 2002, being recognized for his contribution to the community of Cumberland. He also continued to be an active member in the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Indianapolis; The Sahara Grotto; The American Legion Post #264; Veteran's of Foreign Wars, Post 2839; La Societe Des 40 Hommes Et 8 Chevaux, Voiture Locale #145; and the Modern Woodmen. He was an active member of the Speedway Christian Church for almost fifty years. He is survived by his daughter, Annette Sanford Demaree, two grandsons, Jeffery Demaree and Aaron Demaree, one great-grandson, Elijah Quinn Demaree; and two great-granddaughters, Addison Demaree and Brittany Marshall. He was preceded in death by a great-granddaughter, Isabelle Ruth Demaree. He also has many nieces, nephews and cousins who have stayed in touch with him over the years and adding to the enrichment of his life. His brother and four sisters now will be able to add Butch to their never-ending euchre games. A celebration of life will be begin with visiting on Thursday, June 26 from 3 to 9 p.m. at the Conkle Funeral Home, Speedway Chapel, 4925 W. 16th St., Speedway. A Masonic service will be held at 7 p.m. The final celebration will be held on Friday, June 27 at 10 a.m. at the funeral home with burial at Washington Park East Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Speedway Christian Church, Renovation Project, 5110 W. 14th St., Speedway, IN 46224.
