Margaret was one of eleven children born to parents David Clarke and Eliza Swink Russell. Various sources give differing birth years for her, including census records, which differ from her death cert. I have used the birth date on her death cert though I personally feel it is not accurate. I would rather believe the info on her census records. If you look at her DC, it has some errors on it including the birth state for her father and her mother's maiden name.

Corydon Carlos Chapman was born near Amherst Corners, Lorain county, Ohio, April 2, 1834. He is the son of Jacob K. and Juliza (Griffith) Chapman..................

At the age of 21, he was married to Margaret M. Clarke, whose parents were from Kentucky, having settled near Macomb in 1829. She was born here in 1837. Their marriage took place, April 19, 1855. They have had nine children, six of whom are living – Louis M., Annie, John, Lizzie, Fred and Harry. Those deceased are – Millard Fillmore, Eva and Willie. Mr. Chapman is by trade a carriage woodworker, and is a skilled workman. His wife, Margaret M. Chapman, is a member of the Christian church, and has held that connection for 35 years. Mr. Chapman is, politically, a republican.

Corydon C. Chapman came to Macomb, illinois in 1853, and there made his home for a number of years. He was a carriage and wagon-maker by trade, an excellent workman in that line, and a natural genius in the use of tools and all manner of handicraft. For some years he lived in Chicago, where his widow now makes her home. He died at Mendon, Michigan, November 15, 1888. He was a member of the Masonic Fraternity. In politics he was a Republican. Mrs. Chapman was born in Macomb, Illinois October 17, 1839. In her youth she was one of the chief ornaments of the society of Macomb, as she was blessed with good looks, intelligence and winning ways: and she is still very attractive in appearance and manner. She is a faithful member of the Christian Church.
